Honoring the Fallen: The Origins of Memorial Day and the Ongoing Struggles of Our Veterans

In the waning days of the Civil War and the years that followed, Americans across the nation began a solemn tradition of honoring fallen soldiers by adorning their graves with springtime flowers. These early “decoration days” were both communal acts of remembrance and personal expressions of grief. The practice of placing flowers on graves reaches back to Classical Rome and 19th-century Europe, reflecting a timeless human need to mourn and memorialize.

On May 5, 1868, this grassroots movement became formalized when the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), a Union veterans’ organization led by Major General John A. Logan, issued General Orders No. 11—now known as the “Memorial Day Act.” This decree officially designated May 30 as a day to honor and decorate the graves of those who died in defense of the United States.

While many cities have claimed to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, recent scholarship points to the women of Columbus, Georgia. In April 1866, these women advocated for a dedicated day to remember Civil War dead, setting a powerful precedent for what would become a national tradition.

But Memorial Day is not only about history—it remains deeply relevant today. Over 1.3 million American service members have died in the nation’s wars, according to USAFacts. And as of 2023, more than 81,000Americans remain missing in action, with families still waiting for answers. The pain of loss and uncertainty does not end with the battlefield; it continues in the hearts and minds of surviving veterans.

Many veterans struggle with survivor’s guilt, depression, PTSD, and the deep emotional toll of mourning their brothers and sisters in arms. The transition from military to civilian life can be jarring—especially when mental health challenges are compounded by physical health issues and inadequate nutrition.

That’s why the work of Farm2Veteran is so essential. By donating fresh, nutritious food to veterans, Farm2Veteran offers more than a meal—it provides a foundation for healing. Proper nutrition is a vital, often overlooked component of mental wellness. When veterans have access to healthy food, they are better equipped to confront the emotional challenges they face.

We are deeply honored to receive the Outstanding Community Partner Award from Volunteers of America Illinois at their Annual Leadership Luncheon on May 15 at The University Club of Chicago. This recognition means so much to us—not just as an award, but as a reflection of the incredible partnership we’ve built together.

Volunteers of America Illinois played a pivotal role in helping us launch our healthy food donation program for veterans in need. Through their support and leadership at Hope Manor Joliet, and Hope Manor I and II in Chicago, we were able to begin delivering fresh, nutritious food directly to veteran residents—offering not just meals, but a foundation for wellness, dignity, and hope.

We’re grateful for their ongoing commitment to empowering veterans and humbled to work alongside them to support those who have served our nation. Here’s to continued collaboration and impact—together, we’re nourishing futures.
